My dog and my mental health

Studies have shown that dogs can help alleviate depression, anxiety, and other mental health issues. And my greyhound Daisy did precisely that for me.

She could always tell when I needed a cuddle; she’d become very insistent on getting and giving attention.

There were days last year when I struggled to get out of bed and get on with the day, but she was always there for me, with her beautiful eyes filled with life and love, her super long tail whipping back and forth in happiness, and her trying so hard to make her 75-pound self a lap dog (she always succeeded).

We had to say goodbye to Daisy today. The cancer spread, and she was no longer her happy self. She hadn’t run in the backyard in months. And what kind of life is that for a Greyhound?

So thank you, Daisy, for giving me a reason to get out of bed and keep going.

Thanks for choosing us.

Thanks for being so great with the kids, your kids, really.

Thanks for cleaning up all the food the kids dropped every day. Rice is a pain to clean up, and you were better at it than I was.

Thanks for all the wonderful memories, especially our last epic cross-country adventure.

Thanks for being there for me during some of my darkest days and making me feel better. You could always tell when I needed you.

Thanks for the last five years,

We miss you. We love you.
